The basics

What Join From Anywhere is, and what it is not.

What does Join From Anywhere actually do?

It lets the laptop you are sitting at act as the camera and microphone of another laptop that is in a meeting. The meeting runs on that other laptop as usual. You see and hear it on the laptop in front of you, and everyone in the meeting sees and hears you as if you were there.

Which laptop is the Host, and which is the Remote?

The Host is the laptop that joins the meeting. It usually stays where it is, at your desk or in the office. The Remote is the laptop you have with you. Its camera and microphone go to the Host, and the meeting’s audio comes back to it.

Do I need two laptops?

Yes. The whole point is that the meeting runs on one machine while you take part from another. If you only have one laptop, you do not need us: just join the meeting on it.

Does it work on my phone or tablet?

Not yet. Both laptops need Google Chrome on Windows, macOS or ChromeOS. A phone as the Remote is on our list, but it is not there today.

Which meeting apps does it work with?

Any meeting that runs in a Chrome tab and lets you choose a camera and a microphone. Google Meet, Microsoft Teams on the web, Zoom on the web, Webex, Whereby and the rest. The meeting app does not know we exist: it just sees a camera called Join From Anywhere.

Does it work with the Teams or Zoom desktop apps?

No. The Host runs the meeting in Chrome, so use the web version of Teams or Zoom on the Host. Most organisations allow this; if yours does not, Join From Anywhere will not help you.

Do the two laptops need to be on the same network?

No. They talk to each other over the internet, encrypted, and find the best route on their own. Home Wi‑Fi, office network, hotel, phone hotspot: any of them works on either side.

Is there anything to install on the Host besides the extension?

No. One Chrome extension on each laptop, the same one. There is no separate program, no driver and nothing to configure on the meeting itself.

Setting up and pairing

The Host shows a code. The Remote connects to it. That is the whole dance.

How do the two laptops find each other?

Both sign in to your account. The Host shows a short code on its panel. On the Remote you pick that Host from a list, or type its code. From then on the Remote connects to it on its own whenever both panels are open.

Where do I find the Host’s code?

In the panel on the Host: it is shown large under the header, and again in Settings. The same code is listed on the Devices page of your dashboard, so you can read it without walking over to the Host.

Does the Host’s code change?

No. It stays the same for as long as that laptop is on your account, so you can write it down once. It only changes when you press New code yourself.

When would I press New code?

If you shared the code with someone and no longer want them to be able to connect, or if you simply want a fresh one. Remotes that picked this Host by name keep working; a Remote that typed the old code has to type the new one.

I have several Hosts. How does the Remote know which one to use?

It asks you. The Remote lists every Host on your account with its name and whether it is online. Pick one. You can change it any time from "Joining from" on the Remote’s home screen.

Can one Host have several Remotes?

Several Remotes can be set up to use the same Host, but only one is connected at a time: the one that connected last. Stop the others on their own panels if two people share a Host.

Do I need the code at all if both laptops are on my account?

Usually not. With one Host on the account the Remote picks it for you. The code is there for people who prefer typing to picking, or who set the Remote up before the Host has signed in.

Can someone else connect to my Host?

Only if they are signed in to your account. The code is not enough on its own: the server only pairs laptops that belong to the same account, and you can see every laptop on the Devices page and remove any you do not recognise.

I set the Remote up first and the Host is not in the list yet. What now?

Finish the Remote setup, then set up the Host. The next time you open the Remote panel, the Host is in the list; pick it. Or type the Host’s code into the Remote as soon as the Host shows it.

How do I pair again after reinstalling Chrome or getting a new laptop?

Sign in on the new laptop and run the short setup again. Remove the old laptop from the Devices page of the dashboard so it stops appearing in lists. Your other laptop does not need to change anything.

In a meeting

Going live, what the meeting sees, and hearing it back.

How do I start?

Join the meeting on the Host as you always do. On the Remote, press Go live. In the meeting’s device settings on the Host, choose Join From Anywhere as the camera and the microphone. The meeting apps remember that choice.

Why is Go live greyed out?

The Host is not connected yet. Go live only makes sense once a Host is attached, so the button waits for it. Open the panel on the Host, check that it says Connected to server and Ready, and the button comes alive on the Remote.

What does the meeting see before I go live, or when I step away?

A plain dark tile with a camera symbol, and silence. It is clearly not a frozen picture of you. The moment you go live, your camera replaces it.

Can I turn my camera or microphone off without stopping?

Yes. The two round buttons on the preview on the Remote mute the microphone or turn the camera off while the session keeps running. The meeting sees the dark tile while the camera is off.

How do I hear the meeting on the Remote?

On the Host, switch on Share meeting audio in the panel. Chrome only allows this after you click the extension icon on the meeting tab once; the panel tells you if that click is still needed. The Remote then shows "Hearing the meeting" with a volume slider.

Is there a delay?

A little, like any video call: usually well under a second each way. It feels like being in the meeting, not like watching a recording.

Can I share my screen?

Share from the Host, where the meeting runs, using the meeting app’s own Share button. The Remote cannot share its screen through us today.

Can the other people in the meeting tell?

They see a camera called Join From Anywhere in your device list if they look, and otherwise a normal camera feed. Whether you tell them is up to you; our Acceptable Use Policy asks you to follow the rules of your meeting.

How do I end?

Press Stop on the Remote, or Disconnect on the Host. The meeting goes back to the dark tile. Leave the meeting on the Host as usual.

When the connection drops

Networks fail. Here is exactly what happens on each side, and what you have to do, which is usually nothing.

The Remote loses its internet connection during a meeting

The meeting sees the dark camera tile within a few seconds, and your microphone goes quiet. Both panels show Reconnecting. When the Remote is back online it reconnects on its own, usually within ten to twenty seconds, and your camera returns without you pressing anything. You pay nothing for the time you were gone.

The Host loses its internet connection

The meeting itself drops on the Host, which is the meeting app’s problem to recover, and it normally does. Our panel on the Host reconnects to the Remote as soon as the Host is back online. If the meeting app asks you to rejoin, rejoin on the Host and you are back.

I switch the Remote from Wi‑Fi to a phone hotspot

That counts as a short disconnection. Expect ten to twenty seconds of the dark tile, then your camera comes back. You do not need to press Go live again.

The Remote laptop goes to sleep

Sleeping laptops disconnect. When it wakes up, the panel reconnects and goes live again on its own. If you will be away for a while, press Stop first so the meeting shows the dark tile on purpose rather than mid-sentence.

The panel says "Server unreachable · retrying"

The laptop cannot reach our servers, usually because its own internet is down or a firewall is blocking it. A running session keeps going for a while because the audio and video travel directly between your laptops; the panel keeps trying and turns green again by itself. If it stays red on a working network, see the firewall question below.

Does our video go through your servers?

Usually not. The two laptops send audio and video directly to each other, encrypted. When a direct route is impossible, for example behind a strict office firewall, encrypted packets are relayed through our connection servers, which forward them and cannot read them.

My office firewall or VPN blocks it

The extension needs to reach our API over HTTPS and our connection servers over UDP or TCP on port 443 and 3478. Ask your IT team to allow those, or use the Remote from a network you control. The Host usually sits inside the office network and needs the same access.

The meeting shows the dark tile although my Remote says Live

Give it ten seconds; it is almost always a short reconnection. If it stays dark, look at the panel on the Host: it should say Live with a preview. If it shows an error code, the Troubleshooting part of the setup guide lists what each one means.

Will I be charged while disconnected?

No. Meeting time only counts while your Remote is actually sending camera or microphone to a connected Host. Reconnecting, waiting and the dark tile are free.

I came back and the Remote shows a different Host, or no Host

Your session on that laptop ended, usually because it was signed out or the device was removed from the dashboard. Sign in again and pick your Host; everything else is remembered.

Laptops, accounts and sign-in

One account, as many laptops as you need.

How many laptops can I add?

As many as you like, Hosts and Remotes. Pricing is per Host; Remotes are free.

Can I use the same laptop as a Host one day and a Remote the next?

Yes. Open Settings in the panel and remove the device, then run the short setup again and choose the other role. Its code changes when it becomes a Host again.

Why was I signed out?

Either you removed that laptop from the Devices page, you signed out everywhere from Security in the dashboard, or the laptop was offline for more than thirty days. Sign in again on that laptop; the setup is remembered.

Can I share my account with a colleague?

Please do not. The person on camera must be the account holder; that is in our Acceptable Use Policy, and it is also how the free minutes stay free. Each person needs their own account.

What is the "name in meeting apps" setting?

The name the meeting lists for your camera and microphone. It is "Join From Anywhere" by default. If you would rather it looked like any other webcam, change it in Settings on the Remote.

Can I rename a laptop?

Yes, in Settings in its panel or on the Devices page of the dashboard. The name is only for you, so you know which is which.

How do I remove a laptop I no longer have?

On the Devices page of the dashboard, choose Remove next to it. We email you a confirmation link, because removing a laptop signs it out and ends anything it is doing.

Picture and sound

Quality, devices and the small knobs.

What video quality do I get?

Up to 1080p at 30 frames a second when the connection allows, and the extension steps down on its own when it does not. There is a quality cap in Settings for metered connections.

Can I pick which camera and microphone to use?

Yes, on the Remote: the Camera and Microphone rows on the home screen list everything Chrome can see, including USB cameras and headsets. Your choice is remembered.

Which speaker plays the meeting?

The one you choose under Meeting audio output on the Remote. Headphones are a good idea so the meeting does not loop back into your microphone.

The preview on the Remote is mirrored. Is the meeting?

The preview is mirrored so it feels like a mirror; the meeting sees you the right way round. You can turn mirroring off in Settings.

Can I use a virtual background or filters?

Use the meeting app’s own background and filter features on the Host; they apply to the Join From Anywhere camera like any other.

Does the Host need a camera at all?

No. The Host can be a laptop with its lid closed, a desktop without a webcam or a machine in a server room, as long as Chrome is running the meeting on it.

Meeting time and payment

What is free, what costs, and how you pay.

Is there a free trial?

Every account gets 15 minutes of meeting time free, enough to set everything up and sit in a real meeting. Nothing is needed to start: no card, no wallet.

What counts as meeting time?

Only the minutes your Remote is live and sending camera or microphone to a connected Host. Setup, waiting, the dark tile and reconnecting are free.

How much does it cost after the free minutes?

$25 an hour, billed per minute from a balance you top up, or $500 for 30 days of unlimited time on one Host. Remotes are always free.

Does my balance expire?

No. Top up once and use it over months. A subscription does run out after its 30 days; it does not renew by itself, and we email you a week before it ends.

How do I pay?

With crypto, through a hosted checkout. Prices are in US dollars; you pick the coin and the checkout shows the amount. Card payments are not available yet.

What happens if my time runs out during a meeting?

Both panels warn you when thirty minutes are left, with a button to buy more. If the balance reaches zero the session ends and the meeting sees the dark tile. Top up on the Billing page and press Go live again to carry on.

Can I get a refund?

Crypto payments cannot be reversed, so top-ups and subscriptions are final. If something went wrong on our side, write to support and we will put it right with meeting time.

Can I get an invoice for my company?

Yes. Every payment has an invoice on the Billing page, and you can add a company name and tax number there.

How does the referral programme work?

Every account has a referral code on the Invite a friend page of the dashboard. When a friend signs up with it and buys meeting time, you get 10 % of the hours they buy as meeting time, every time they buy, and they get 10 % extra on their first purchase.

Privacy and security

Short version: we never see or store your meeting.

Do you record or store my meetings?

No. Audio and video travel between your own laptops, encrypted, and never touch our storage. We could not replay a meeting even if someone asked us to.

What do you store?

Your email address, a hash of your password, the names and codes of your laptops, when sessions started and ended, and billing records. That is the whole list; it is in the Privacy Policy.

Is the connection encrypted?

Yes. Audio and video use WebRTC with DTLS-SRTP encryption between your laptops. Our servers only help the two sides find each other and, when a direct route is impossible, forward encrypted packets they cannot read.

Can my IT department see that I use it?

They can see that Chrome has an extension installed and that it talks to joinfromanywhere.com. They cannot see your camera or audio. If your employer forbids browser extensions, follow their rules.

Can I delete my account?

Yes, from Security in the dashboard. It removes everything except the billing records we are required to keep.

Where are your servers?

In the United States, where most of our users are. Connection servers that relay a meeting when a direct route is impossible sit at the network edge close to you, so the extra distance stays short wherever you are.

Still stuck?

The setup guide walks through every screen, and its troubleshooting list explains each error code. For anything else, open Diagnostics from the panel menu, press Copy report, and send it to us from the dashboard. The report has no meeting content, only connection details.
